Sexual assault and victim-blaming
Jane Green, Tarneen Onus Williams, Kate Kay-Ryan and Lynette Satalich courageously open up about their experiences of sexual assault and the impact it had on their lives. Statistics show 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence in Australia.* And while sexual assault is spoken about more widely now and covered more frequently in the media, there is still a culture of victim blaming that underpins it. The stories of sexual assault that we see in the media are also limited in their representation, which contributes to further victim blaming, by perpetuating the idea that other forms of sexual assault are less worthy of our attention. We need to listen to the stories of survivors of sexual assault, believe them and support them in their journey and start educate all on how not to sexually assault – not the other way round.
